Julia is a magazine of art seeking submissions from new and graduate writers invested in creative and critical art writing, with a particular interest in pieces that isolate and focus on a single image or artwork.
The magazine is inspired by the editor’s experience of engaging so joyfully with friends in discussions on art and philosophy during her MFAs in Oslo, Norway and Claremont, California and the practice of staying strictly within the image.
The first piece, published in June 2024, was written on spec by the editor prior to defining the magazine’s interests. While it eventually highlights one painting, it is not representative of the magazine’s direction.
Julia accepts email submissions on a rolling basis of new, previously unpublished essays, interviews, and reviews of up to 500 words. Please include in the email body the title, date, and place of the written piece, an author bio of up to 100 words, and any helpful context in which the piece was written. Attach the full text in .docx or .doc. Simultaneous submissions are permitted; however, please notify us if and as soon as your piece is accepted elsewhere.
Submission does not guarantee publication. Once the copy is approved by the editor, Julia handles all image requests. Published writers are paid $0.25 (USD) per word.
